| Empire have finally published their top 500 movies, so lets see where my choices were. Despite the poor showing for Holy Grail (I think a split caused by Life Of Brian is to blame, it was much higher), I was most surprised by how low down Amadeus is - I'm not as surprised by the high place for The Dark Knight and if the same poll was run in a few years, I would anticipate it dropping by about twenty odd places. This sort of thing usually happens. At least all my choices were on there and I'm not some kind of freakish movie simpleton. Oh? The best film of all time? Go look for yourself. God, I hate the Empire Website.
ReplyDeleteWhat a boring winner. Some Like It Hot should have won, and I didn't even see it in the top 10.
I tired of top 10/100/whatever lists a long time, ago, though. And the Empire website is slow and rubbish I can't be bothered to sift through it.
I actually purchased my copy of Empire magazine this morning. In broad daylight. Without the brown paper packing!
ReplyDeleteIt had a comprehensive list of the top 500 movies "of all time", along with interesting anecdotes or articles about a number of them (did you know, for instance that Who Framed Roger Rabbit? was going to be the first of 6 Roger Rabbit movies?). Well worth the money - and far quicker to read through than the web version - especially when seated in the small room. . . .
For what it's worth, I thought the top 5 were..OK I would probably have swapped one of the Scorsese movies from the top 10 with The Empire Strikes Back, but that's just me....
Yeah, but Empire licks Scorsese's balls. Still the best of the film mags though.

I was more impressed by Indy beating Star Wars - AT LAST JUSTICE!
What's with the S.L.I.H. obsession? I love the film and it is better than several of those that beat it (Casablanca, Singing In the Rain to name but two) but "should have won" is silly.
These polls are all about evening out all of the individual opinions. That's democracy, baby!
Bear in mind that my favourite comedy didn't even make the first 300!
The injustice for me is definitely Amadeus, which I think blows Godfather out of the water, but that's just my opinion, I guess.
Now... tell me what INLAND EMPIRE was all about...

Not a bad showing for the wonderful old Cross dressing runaway mob hit witnesses comedy. Comedies hardly ever win anything.
Now, a more relevant thing to look at is which COMEDIES were above S.L.I.H.

15 - The Apartment
So it got beat by two of the other best comedies of all time. I don;t really see too much injustice here... they're all fairly different films.
And Jack Lemmon's in two of them, so that's good too.
